Kangocho Factory, supported by 781 producers
Kangocho Factory in Karatina, Nyeri County, central Kenya, is the washing station of the Gikanda Farmers Cooperative Society, whose 781 smallholder members deliver their cherries here. Cherries are sorted again on arrival, pulped once the ripeness is even, left overnight in fermentation tanks to break down the mucilage, washed in channels and then dried. The pulp goes back to the fields as compost. The cooperative holds Fairtrade certification and provides its members with visits from agronomists and support for medical and school costs.
